One computer classroom: Computer-assisted instruction

What is computer-assisted instruction?  How can you as an exemplary teacher effectively plan instruction with one computer in the classroom?

  1. In my opinion, a one computer classroom would be what we would find in the economically challenged school districts in this part of Ohio, such as Cleveland. The one computer classroom can be creatively used as a lecture tool using a projector, as a starting point for projects involving small groups which will rotate depending on what stage of the project the groups of students are at, or as a learning center.

  2. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) is instruction that delivers directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. An example of a program like this is Accelerated Reader.

At first, it may be hard to figure out how to only use one computer for the entire classroom, but it definitely is possible. I would say the best way to effectively use just one computer is to hook up a projector to it. This would allow you to display the information that is being accessed available on a wider visual scale. Also allowing different groups of students the opportunity to have time with the computer for projects and research would also be very effecient.

  3. Computer-assisted instruction is the use of a computer, let it be a single computer or a computer lab, to (as the name would imply) assist in teaching a group of students (or an individual student) and as mentioned in this forum previously, single computer education is seen in more economically challenged schools such as Cleveland, where labs are prevalent in suburban districs, such as Olmsted Falls or Brunswick. A teacher can still teach well with just one comptuer in the classroom, especially if there is easy access to a television as well. Hooking a computer up to a television allows students to see what is on the computer screen, and is easy and quick to accomplish. This action would allow a teacher or educator to play videos, show students a particular item or bit of information, and show powerpoint or excel presentations with ease. However, if a computer/television network is not available, small group rotations (as suggested in this forum) is an excellent way to show students an item of interest, and in younger ages, eagerness grows as it comes to be their turn to see the computer. Computers, even a single one, can be used to promote learning, inspiration, and excitement in any size classrooms.

  4. This is an easy to use device to reinforce classroom instruction. One way is to prepare notes in advance and to display these notes from the computer through a device that will display them on a screen to reinforece what instruction or information that you are wanting your student to learn or remember.

  5. Computer-assisted instruction is instruction delivered directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. As an exemplary teacher there are several ways to effectively plan instruction with one computer in the classroom. One way is a large group presentation. As the teacher you can demonstrate to a whole class how to use a particular software program. As the teacher you can also have a small group of students work together on the program, and then rotate the groups so every group has a turn. Lastly is to have the computer set up as a learning center where individual students or small groups can go and do their work.

  6. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) is when the computer helps the students to learn specific skills and to reinforce the students. It may be difficult to teach with only one computer in the classroom but it can be done. If there is something that you need to show your students on the computer you can bring them over to the computer in small groups or if there is a projector in the classroom you can use that and display it for the entire class to see. You can also have the students go to the computer individually. The single computer is also for the teacher to prepare the lessons, calculate grades, and assist with the teaching.

  7. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is instruction delivered directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. Having only one computer in a classroom can probably be challenging to some teachers but I think it would bring a classroom of students together and give them many opportunities to learn. Each student could have their own time to add input to a class project that would be challenging in a computer lab and having to get many students information sent to one location. This way the class could see what all is being added to the project if the screen is projected. The students could also visually be involved in lessons because the teacher could create power points or presentations on the computer and project it to the class.

  8. CAI is computer-assisted instruction. CAI helps students learn specific skills. Computers serve as an easy-to-use device to reinforce classroom instruction. Having one computer in the classroom can be challenging, but is still mangable. When there is only one computer students are able to work in groups. This helps students gain social skills and helps them work together. Teachers can make sure students all get a chance to work on the computer, it just takes planning.

  9. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) helps students learn certain skills. Computers are a good attribute in the classroom and serve as an easy-to-use device to help reinforce instruction in your classroom. By using CAI students get to learn different activities in a fun way. You can use different multimedia programs on the computers, instead of book work everyday.

With a one-computer classroom you can use that computer for large groups, small groups, as a learning center, of for a personal secretary. You could use a projector so the whole class is able to participate. When using small groups this gives kids the ability to interact with their group members as well as the software program. Have a set time limit for each group to be on the computer, so each group has equal amount of time! You may think of a one-computer classroom not working at all but i found out you just need to know how and when to use your one computer! and how to plan different instructions based on the lesson .

  10. Computer Assisted Instruction is instruction delivered directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. With one computer in the classroom, I would use it by projecting its image onto a bigger screen. I would plan lessons and actvities that can be shown on the computer and seen by all students at the same time.

  11. Computer assisted instruction is instruction or teaching tools presented on a computer. A classroom can effectively use a single computer as a tool to enhance student growth. Powerpoint presentations and instruction through video will work well with a single computer. Even small group roation is possible and effective.

  12. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is when computers delivers instructional information directly to a student. CAI is often used for drill and practice, teaching tutorials, and engaging the student in their learning.
Often teachers do not have the luxury of having numerous computers in their classrooms for a group of students to use at one time. They often find themselves lucky to have one. As a teacher, you must use the one computer you have to your own advantage. If my classroom only had one computer, I would use it not only for singe student work but also for group activities. With one computer, a teacher is able to project information to the whole class and teach them how to use certain software or carry out a certain task. Another use for a one computer classroom is using it for small groups. Students in small groups can collaborate and work together, and then alternate letting other students work. One computer could also be used a tutoring center. A student having trouble can work alone on his or her skills. The last use would be for the teachers benefit. He or she can use the one computer to keep track of grades, emailing parents, or for creating handouts. Teachers should not be discouraged with only one computer, but should use it to their advantage in their classroom.

  13. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is instruction delivered to students by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into ther classroom computer system. If you only have one computer in your classroom, you can split students up into groups to share the computer. Each group would have a certain amount of time on the computer to use the software to gather and present data. You can also use the computer to assist yourself as the teacher by maintaining students grades and preparing instructional materials.

  14. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) is instruction delivered directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. A way for an exemplary teacher to use just one computer in the classroom would be for display purposes. A teacher can present a powerpoint presentation with all of the information for the lesson or show videos. Also this is a good way for students to present individual presentations about research they have conducted. Another way to use one computer in the classroom is for group research. Students can be assigned groups to research a topic and each group can have a specified amount of time to do their research. A teacher could also give each student time on the computer to practice math by using Math Blaster.

  15. Computer-Assistant Instruction is the use of a computer system t manage information about learner performance and learning resources and to then prescribe and control individual lessons. Student are in direct contact or interaction with the lessons. Personally I think one computer in a classroom presents a challenge. Having been in a classroom with one computer, the children were limited with their use, and from my observations it created a delay in planned lessons. But that was with that one experience. I'm sure not all classrooms with one computer operate like that. I would like to believe it's about strategically planning and using good organizational skills. The students didn't necessarily have to work as a large group, but as the text book explained, worked in small groups simultaneously allowing all of the children to get an opportunity that day to use the computer. And time could have been set aside for individual use during play time or free time.

  16. Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) is when computer give direct instruction to the student. Some examples of this include drill and practice, presentations, and tutorials. A teacher can plan a lesson using CAI in a one computer classroom by doing multiple things. One thing a teacher can do is make a slide show, on a program such as PowerPoint, and use a projector so that the entire class can see the presentation. Another thing a teacher can do is set up a time schedule so that each student has her or her own time on the computer. This will avoid any conflicts and will still give each individual student some CAI.

  17. Computer-assisted instruction is instruction delivered directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. One way to use only one computer in the classroom is PowerPoint presentations. When you teach, use it to guide your lesson. You can also break the students into small groups and let them each have a chance to make their own presentation as a group.

  18. Computer-assisted instruction is when you use programs on the computer to directly teach students about a certain lesson or how to use a certain skill. A teacher can plan instruction with one computer by splitting the class into groups and work on a project. Each group can use the computer when they need it by signing up for a certain time. In the meantime, the other groups can work at their desks on any written parts that they may have to do. A gruop could even come in during lunch or study hall to work on it. Also, you could use it for individual instruction if a student needs help on a lesson. Finally, the students could use it to present powerpoints as a group or individually.

  19. Computer assisted instruction is information that the students get from lessons involving their interaction with programs in a computer. As a teacher using a one computer-classroom, you can use the computer to keep track of each students progress and grades as well as make lesson plans and outlines. The students can use the computer to play educational games during free time and search for facts related to their homework or a project. It provides extra study time when the student has completed everything else, keeping their brain active on productive, educational topics.

  20. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) delivers directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lesson programmed into the computer system. In a one-computer classroom a teacher can come up with creative ways to have the whole class interact with the computer. The teacher can have the students interact in a large group setting with the help of a projector. The teacher can also have the students interact with the computer in a small group. While students are doing work at their seats, a group of students can take turns using the computer or can interact with the computer individually to work on class projects or assignments.

  21. Computer-assisted instruction is instruction delivered directly to learners by allowing them to interact with lessons programmed into the computer system. In other words, computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is an instructional tool which allows students to reinforce the skills they have learned in class by performing drill-and-practice programs and reviewing the information on computers. The difficulties that come with CAI take place when schools do not always have the proper funding and classrooms only have one computer. This makes it more difficult to incorporate CAI into a lesson, however, it is not impossible. By finding software that is geared for a group of students, such as a program that allows children to work in small groups on the computer then return to their seats and work individually would be perfect in a one-computer classroom. This way children can benefit from cooperative learning, computer-assisted instruction, and individual work all in one lesson.

  22. Computer assisted instruction is when students benefit from using the computer directly. This is a very effective strategy because students motivation is usually very high when given the chance to work independently on a computer. The teacher with just one copmuter in the classroom needs to be more creative in how CAI in administered. One option would be to set up small groups who can work together on the computer. This ensures all students get their chance. It is also important to give individuals a chance to work on their own. Forming a 'Learning Center' with the computer at it's core, can allow students who need or want more CAI to get it.

  23. A single computer in the classroom can be used in a variety of ways. Slides and graphics can be displayed to reinforce lecture style teaching. Games such as Jeopardy can played by the entire class. The teacher can create interactive worksheets to be displayed on a Smartboard. Students, individually or in teams, can alternate demonstrating problem solving at the Smartboard.
